Recording
Desktop only
You can record a performance to a video file, with sound.
Recording a video
Open the Record tab. Click Choose MIDI file and select a MIDI file, or drop one onto the tab. To pick a different file, click Change.
Under Save as, choose where to save the video. By default, the video is saved next to the MIDI file with the same name. Videos are saved as MP4 files.
Then, click Record.
Important
A preview window opens while the app records. Closing it cancels the recording.
While recording, the tab shows the progress and about how much time is left. Click Cancel to stop.
When the recording finishes, click Open video to watch it, or Show in folder to find the file.
Video options
- Resolution – 720p, 1080p, 1440p, or 2160p (4K). The preview window is drawn at the size of the video, so the app only offers resolutions that fit on your screen.
- Frame rate – 24, 25, 30, 50, 60, 120, 144, or 240 frames per second.
- Quality – Low (smallest file), Medium (balanced), High, or Maximum (best-looking). Higher quality settings produce larger files.
Audio options
The audio is rendered by the built-in synthesizer, not your MIDI device. Choose which soundbank the synthesizer uses from the Soundbank dropdown.
Recording from the command line
You can also record a video from the command line, without opening the app's window:
midis2jam2 <file.mid> --record <out.mp4> [options]
--resolution– The size of the video:720p,1080p,1440p,2160p, or a width and height such as1920x1080. The width and height must be even.--fps– The frame rate:24,25,30,50,60,120,144, or240.--quality– The video quality:low, medium, high, ormaximum.--soundbank– A.sf2or.dlssoundbank to render the audio with.
For example:
midis2jam2 song.mid --record song.mp4 --resolution 1080p --fps 60 --quality high
Any option you leave out uses the last choice you made on the Record tab.
The app prints its progress as it records.
It exits with code 0 when the video is saved, or 2 if the command is invalid.
